Setting Up Inventory Meta Descriptions and SEO Page Titles

Meta descriptions and SEO page titles help describe your inventory item’s website page to customers and search engines.

  • Meta Description: A short summary of the page that search engines may use in search results.
  • SEO Page Title: The title of the page, which can appear in the browser tab and may be used as the title in search results.

To set these up in IO, create two inventory optional fields, then enter a separate title and description for each item.

Create the Meta Description Field

  1. Go to Settings → Optional Fields and add a custom field.
  2. Name the field Meta Description.
  3. Set the field type to Large Text.
  4. Set Page / Display on Page to Inventory.
  5. Set Section to Extra Details. This is the recommended section for these fields.
  6. Set Special Field to Meta Description.
  7. If a website or page-group selector appears, select the appropriate website.
  8. Save the field.

Note: The Special Field setting connects the field to website metadata. Naming the field “Meta Description” alone does not complete the setup.

Create the SEO Page Title Field

  1. Go to Settings → Optional Fields and add a custom field.
  2. Name the field SEO Page Title.
  3. Set the field type to Text.
  4. Set Page / Display on Page to Inventory.
  5. Set Section to Extra Details. This is the recommended section for these fields.
  6. Set Special Field to Page Title.
  7. If a website or page-group selector appears, select the appropriate website.
  8. Save the field.

Note: The field name is SEO Page Title, but the Special Field selection is Page Title. This selection connects the field to the website page title.

Add a Title and Description to an Inventory Item

  1. Go to Settings → Inventory and open the item you want to edit.
  2. Expand the Extra Details section to find Meta Description and SEO Page Title. If you chose a different section during setup, expand that section instead.
  3. Enter a short description and page title specific to that item.
  4. Save the item.
  5. Repeat for the other items you want to update.

Example SEO Page Title:

Rainbow Bounce House Rental in Columbus | Example Party Rentals

Example Meta Description:

Rent our Rainbow Bounce House for birthdays and backyard parties in Columbus, Ohio. Check availability and book online with Example Party Rentals.

Replace the example details with information that accurately describes your item, business, and service area.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Q: The fields do not appear when I edit an item.
A: Expand Extra Details on the inventory item. If the fields are still missing, open each field under Settings → Optional Fields. Confirm that it is assigned to Inventory and check the selected Section. Save any corrections, then return to the inventory item and expand that section.

Q: I named the fields Meta Description and SEO Page Title. Is that enough?
A: You must also set Special Field to Meta Description for the description field and Page Title for the title field. Confirm the correct website or page group is selected if that option appears.

Q: Do I need to create new optional fields for every item?
A: Create the two fields once for the applicable setup, then enter a separate title and description on each inventory item.
