Alert emails are being duplicated

This is more of a minor annoyance than a problem...
When a sales rep cancels a lead, autosave kicks in and sends an alert. If the sales rep makes another change, or hits save before closing the lead, the alert is sent again.
Do I need to stop using alerts and instead create automations to take their place?
