return events counted in event number

we have a status "Serve Returns" where we copy a lead to create a return service. It is not a new event but I believe it is counting towards the new event total even though I have unchecked the box under the status settings that says "send to reports." is there a work around?
Setting up "tear down and return" for separate dates won't work? ....Or recurring lead?
