Is the only way to take inventory out of service by checking the available box? I want to be able to take a unit's availability away for certain days thoughout the year

Susan's answer is the best way to do this. You can set a check-out and check-in date at the same time, so it will only be unavailable for the duration of your "scheduled maintenance". If you know 5 dates that you want it to be unavailable, you can set them all at once.
