Paying without signing the contract

Had a customer pay in full for an event WITHOUT signing the contract. The problem is they want a refund stating they didn't sign the contract for the event and found someone cheaper. The items were booked for a month and I lost the rentals I could have booked to someone else, if they would have cancelled sooner than the day before the event. My lawyer said I have to refund thier money since they didnt sign the contract! Is there a way to prevent this? This needs to be fixed!
