Marking items inactive seasonally

Is there a way to make an item inactive without affecting the child items? For example, I have several slides that are suitable for use with water or as a dry slide. Right now for summer, I'd like to make the child items (the dry slide version inactive). I can do that easily by marking the child inactive, but is there a way to make the water slide version (which is the parent) inactive but still have the dry slide child item available?
