Limit number of uses for coupon

When I limit the number of uses for a coupon is that per email address or per coupon? as in, if I set the limit to "1" will each new email address that uses that code be able to use it but only 1 time or is it the first one to put it in will be the only one who gets to use it?

This is a limit on how many times the coupon can be used overall...not per customer. Thanks!
