Change "Thank You" automatic email to send on status change

Can you change the trigger that sends the final thank you automatic email? Currently it sends automatically once the event goes past the event end date but is it possible to trigger it when/after a lead status has been set to "complete"?
Our use case is that we have customers who don't always return on time, they return a day or two later and if we don't update the event date info, it sends them the thank you email before the equipment has even been returned.

We will look into changing it. In the meantime, you could create another status before Complete that is set not to send auto emails.
