Is there a way to see availability of an item by day? If I wanted to know availability of a specific item on August 1, 2015?

The same question
You can create a new lead, set the date/time and select the item and qty and hit update. If it's in red it is unavailable. If you want to see the number booked for that day, type in 1000 for the qty and then use the overbooked number to know how many are used for that day.
Other methods:
For simple items (not parent/child nor structure items), go to Calendar, click on the day #, and change it to Rental Availability.
You can also use Filters on the Leads page to filter by item by typing in rental: Big Bounce House and clicking it from the drop-down. and then set the date range.
You can go to the Settings->Inventory and go to that item, then click the Log tab to see the most recent events it is part of.
