Recharging a Gift Card

Hello,
I realize we can, as admins, recharge the Gift Cards manually once they have been issued, I would like to know if once a customer has been issued a Gift Card does the system allow them to purchase additional amounts during check out which would increase the available amount on an existing gift card or does it issue a new separate gift card.
If the existing Gift Card info is already captured during checkout could a selection be available for the customer to either add the new gift card amount purchased to the existing card or opt for an additional separate card.

The customer isn't able to add to the GC balance themselves...they would have to purchase a new card.
