Is there a way to make it so that items booked for an event date can be made unavailable for 48 hours before and 48 hours after the event date?

You would need to set up recovery times on the items.

no, recovery time is calculated from end of pickup window to start of delivery window. this is additional time in house for cleaning.

and if there are bookings in the future with no delivery windows then items can be booked back to back

It works both ways as long as the event is a contracted event, I just tested it and it shows unavailable, I had a unit on a lead for 5/31 with a 48 hr recovery time and tried to get a quote for the 29th and it said it was unavailable. I tested on my own acct. you can try it on one of your items and test.

we do not pickup our Saturday events until Monday or Tuesday. we can't put a 72 hour recovery time then when we add delivery and pickup windows we will have constant conflicts that we have to investigate just to find out they aren't conflicts at all. we really need 2 sperate settings for these

There really isn't anything that can be done other than setting up your delivery and pick up windows as soon as an event is confirmed.
