recurring events and associated shifts

When I create a recurring event with shifts that I also want recurring, and I have workers claim those shifts in the initial event, the system automatically assigns those workers in those shifts forever into the future in each recurring event...
What is the best way to keep the event and shifts recurring, but not automatically assign the workers and just leave the shifts without an assigned worker so my workers can claim them?
