Auto variable suggestion

It would be AMAZING if when I type in an asterisk, a pop-up next to where I was typing would give a list of variables that would narrow down as I typed and disappear when I either hit the space bar or the asterisks again. I would like to be able to use this anytime I'm editing or creating template emails, pages, packing lists, etc.
Bonus: include custom variables for the account bast on variable name

If this is too difficult to implement, even a dropdown from the editing toolbar with the variables would be awesome (especially if it were searchable).
But your idea would definitely be better if it's doable! I'm thinking like in Excel how suggested formulas automatically pop up, or autocomplete in Gmail or predictive text on mobile devices, etc...
