Sorry I was testing and the surface is required on checkout customer facing but not backend on the lead on admin side. We don't currently have a way to toggle the setting to be required or not on the admin side. I can add you to the feature request we have in for this field to be required backend.

We created a work around for this by adding a drop down called "did you add surface?" via the optional fields, the user is required to select YES in order to save the lead - this at least reminds the sales people to double check that they added a surface
