Such a thing?
It would be good to separate some types of categories,
eg:
Linen>Tablecloths
Linen>Chair Sashes
Linen>Table Runners
It's the type of thing we're separated, it creates too many look-a-like categories and a jumble when all the different types/sizes etc are included.
If not, what is a work around with the WP sync so it doesn't override any changes on a cat page we make as we could make the above links manually.
Can the sync be selective?

I like this idea, but it would be a major change that we aren't prepared to make just yet. Some of our customers do list their categories with a lead word like you have in your example for the sake of readability and it does seem to help:
"Linens: tablecloths"
"Linens: Chair Sashes"
....
