I have a few categories showing up with 404 errors.

https://iepnw.com/category/led_furniture/ 404HTTP status

https://iepnw.com/category/games/ 404HTTP status

https://iepnw.com/category/bounce_house-slide_combos/ 404HTTP status

https://iepnw.com/category/tents_tables_and_chairs/ 404HTTP status

https://iepnw.com/items/trackless_train_rental/ 404HTTP status

https://iepnw.com/category/water_slides/ 404HTTP status

All the categories that are working show up with the word rentals instead of category is the address line.

Example https://iepnw.com/rentals/water_slides/ 404 HTTP status

How do I fix this?

Old website pages can still appear on Google search results because it takes time for Google to re-crawl and update its index to reflect changes on a website, meaning even if a page has been deleted or significantly altered, it may still show up in search results until Google recognizes the change and removes it from its cache; this process can take several weeks or even months depending on how often Google crawls the site.

Key points about why old pages might still appear:

  • Crawling and indexing delay:
Google's web crawlers regularly scan websites for updates, but it can take time for them to reach a specific page and re-index it after changes are made.
  • Cached versions:
Google stores cached versions of webpages for a period, which means even if a page is deleted, users might still see a cached version in search results for a while.
  • Backlinks:
If an old page still has backlinks from other websites, it can continue to rank well in search results even if it's no longer actively maintained.

How to remove old pages from Google search:

  • Update the website content:
Make sure the old content is replaced with new, relevant information on the page.
  • Use robots.txt:
Add a "noindex" directive in your robots.txt file to tell Google not to index specific pages.
  • Set a 404 error code:
If a page is deleted, configure your server to return a 404 "Not Found" error code to signal to Google that the page is no longer available.
  • Submit a removal request through Google Search Console:
If there are legitimate reasons why a page should be removed from search results, you can submit a removal request through Google Search Console.
